LICENCE CATEGORIES - THE FACTS

Larger vehicles on a separate licence - categories from 2013

On 19 January 2013 the European Union Third Directive on driving licences came into force. All new driving licences from this date had to meet the terms of the Directive.
 
CATEGORIES FROM 2013
  • (CE) - Vehicle over 3,500kg with a trailer over 750kg - (HGV 1)
  • (C) - Vehicle over 3,500kg with a trailer up to 750kg - (HGV 2 or 3)
  • (CE) Vehicle over 3,500kg with a trailer over 750kg (draw-bar only) - (HGV 2 or 3)
  • (DE) - Passenger carrying vehicle (PCV) (more than 8 passenger seats) with a trailer over 750kg - (PSV 1 or 2)
  • (D) - PCV (more than 8 passenger seats) with a trailer up to 750kg - (PSV 3)
  • (D) - PCV (more than 8 passenger seats) and less than 5.5 metres long - (PSV 4)
  • (C or CE) - Automatic vehicles only in group HGV 1-3 - (HGV 1-3A)
  • (D OR DE) - Automatic vehicles only in group PSV 1-4 - (PSV 1-4A)
 
C - LARGE GOODS VEHICLES -  Vehicles over 3500kg with a trailer up to 750kg, designed and constructed for the carriage of no more than eight passengers in addition to the drive
 
CATEGORY C+E
C+E - LARGE GOODS VEHICLES WITH TRAILERS -  •    Vehicles over 3500kg designed and constructed for the carriage of no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver with a  trailer over 750kg.
 
CATEGORY D
D - BUSES - Any bus designed and constructed for the carriage of more than 8 passengers in addition to the driver, with a trailer up to 750 kg
 
CATEGORY D+E
DE - BUSES WITH TRAILERS - Buses with trailers - Any bus designed and constructed for the carriage of more than 8 passengers in addition to the driver, with a trailer over 750 kg
